What if you could see a song?

Created as a tribute to David Bowie’s Space Oddity, Oddityviz transforms music into sculpture. Each of ten custom-made vinyl discs visualises a different layer of the song — from structure and lyrics to melody, harmony, and emotional peaks.

Challenge

How do you capture the soul of a song in data? Rather than simplify, we expanded. We dissected Space Oddity into ten dimensions and etched the findings into the grooves of sculptural LPs. The record itself became the metaphor: a data container made visible.

Solution

Time became the common thread, spiralling from 12 o’clock around each disc. Major Tom appeared as a fluid circle, Ground Control as a square, while instruments orbited like constellations. Classical strings and futuristic synths were mapped to show their interplay, revealing why the crescendo lifts us into space both musically and emotionally. The visual investigation was then brought to life with animation, in a freer attempt to link various aspects of the deconstruction to the actual music.

Impact

Oddityviz bridged sound, sight, and imagination — turning music into data poetry. Exhibited at Wieden+Kennedy, the installation invited audiences to see and feel Bowie’s work anew, revealing the structure behind the magic and the emotion behind the structure.
