Student FAQs
We’d love to reply to every student who reaches out, but our schedule doesn’t always make that possible. For now, we’re not able to offer portfolio reviews or thesis interviews. To help, we’ve pulled together answers to the most common questions we get from students.
Any advice on getting a full-time job or starting freelancing in data visualization?
Start with your portfolio — show your skills but also what makes you unique. What subjects do you care about? What’s your perspective? Let that come through in your work. Then, make yourself visible. The best portfolio won’t help if no one sees it. Share your work on LinkedIn, connect with studios, join events and hackathons, and engage with the community (not just by promoting yourself, but by being curious about others too). Finally, keep learning. New tools and methods appear all the time, but curiosity and consistency matter more than knowing everything. The best opportunities come when you show your full self.
What kinds of jobs can I get in data visualization?
What’s one tip you wish you’d learned earlier?
Do I need to study computer science, design, or statistics to get into the field?
How do you find inspiration for personal projects?
Can you give me prompts to kickstart a new data-driven project?
What project are you most proud of?
Whose work do you admire and wish you’d done?
If someone says “dataset”, what comes to mind?
Data is or Data are?
